Snail slime has been a secret ingredient of various beauty products for years - prized for its anti-ageing and skin rejuvenating properties. However, a brand new beauty treatment has emerged which involves more than just a slick of slime, and rather the entire snail itself crawling across your skin.
A spa in Tokyo is leading this innovative beauty treatment, which allows for the soothing, anti-inflammatory, moisturising and exfoliating properties of the fresh snail slime to penetrate the skin’s surface. The mucus from the snails is bursting full of powerful anti oxidants, hyaluronic acid and proteins, and is thought to have greater impact on our skin when applied fresh.
The treatment – which is called the Celebrity Escargot Course – starts with a therapist washing the client’s face before placing the snails gently on their forehead and cheeks. This is finished off with massages, use of electrical pulse machines, and the application of creams – all of which contain additional snail slime. The treatment lasts approximately 60 minutes.
Here in the UK only a few salons are offering snail slime facials to the public, but it is thought by the end of the year, the beauty treatment will be available all over Britain. Just like their Japanese counterparts, the snails used in British treatments are specially farmed so their diets are clean and luxurious, while all beauty therapists are fully trained to handle the snails and guide their movements when applied to a client’s face.
As well as providing skin rejuvenation and soothing benefits, snail slime is also thought to help treat severe skin conditions such as acne. For many though, the live snail slime facial offers a more natural source of anti-ageing goodness, devoid of the chemicals found in certain anti-ageing products.
