Thanks to the Internet, there are video tutorials and how-to blogs to do almost anything – and that includes beauty treatments. With all of this information at our fingertips, it’s easier than ever to go down the DIY route… but that doesn’t always mean you should.
Here we look at some different beauty treatments and when you should see a professional versus when you can do it yourself.
When to DIY: Keeping your brows tidy and getting rid of stray hairs is totally fine to do at home. The key is not to get too carried away or you may inadvertently change the shape.
When to see a professional: If you want to re-shape your brows or you simply prefer to let a professional keep them tidy, book yourself an appointment with a trained brow specialist.
Lash and brow tinting
When to DIY: Never. No matter how careful you are, using chemicals near your eyes is always going to be risky, so it’s best to leave this job to those who have the training.
When to see a professional: Always. Make sure the professional you see has had adequate training in brow/lash tinting.
When to DIY: Want to give your complexion a boost without spending too much money? Try a DIY facial. There are plenty of face masks and facial products available to buy, just ensure you get one that’s suited to your skin type.
When to see a professional: If you want to see more impressive results, get skincare advice or simply want some time to be pampered, go to a professional for a facial. A dermatologist has training in techniques that help your skin look its absolute best.
Manicures and pedicures
When to DIY: For some, DIY manicures and pedicures are a source of relaxation and me-time. If this is you, keep on enjoying your routine and experiment with some DIY nail art designs to mix things up a little.
When to see a professional: If you like the look of painted nails, but hate the process of doing them, take stress out of the equation by visiting a nail technician. If you have a special event coming up (a birthday, wedding, work event etc.) you may also want to treat yourself to a professional manicure and/or pedicure.
When to DIY: This really depends on which area of your body you want to wax. If you’ve done it before and are comfortable waxing your own legs for example, feel free to go ahead. When it comes to areas like the bikini line and eyebrows however, you may feel happier leaving it to someone with experience.
When to see a professional: If you have never had a wax before, it is best to see a professional first. Also, if you have any doubts about doing it yourself, book an appointment instead – you can always ask them about DIY techniques when you’re there.
When to DIY: If you are confident in your make-up skills, keep doing it yourself and look to YouTube for an array of tutorials to try new techniques.
When to see a professional: If you feel you could do with some pointers, or you have a special occasion coming up – treat yourself to an appointment with a make-up artist. You can book in a make-up lesson or hire a make-up artist to make you feel extra special for your big event.
