Summertime is just around the corner, and as the weather gets warmer and days get longer we are SO ready to get our legs out and catch some rays.
For those of you sporting white limbs that have been buried away over winter, you’ve probably already considered stocking up on self-tanning essentials to get a bronzed glow.
While there’s arguably nothing better than getting a professional spray tan at your local salon, we have some top tips to help you glow like a pro using some of the best high street buys in 2015.
Using an oil-based tanning solution is a great way to lock in extra moisture and keep skin supple while you apply. The presence of the oil can also help the tan to last longer. We recommend St Tropez Self Tan Luxe Dry Oil (£25), which moisturises for up to seven days and is super easy to apply.
Top tip: Always moisturise areas of rough skin such as knees, hands and elbows before using tanning products. This makes sure your tan develops evenly all over.
Self-tanning serum is a great way to build a natural-looking tan gradually. All you need to do is add a few drops to your daily moisturiser. This makes it easy to apply and eliminates the possibility of unattractive streaks. Clarins Radiance Plus Golden Glow Booster (£18) provides a healthy, natural glow that develops evenly on the skin.
Top tip: For an even more radiant tan, use an exfoliating scrub on your face before the first application of the serum. This means your skin is free of dead skin cells and more receptive to active ingredients.
Mousse formulas are lightweight and very handy if you have oily skin. They do however tend to absorb quite quickly so you’ll need to wear a tanning mitt when applying to avoid staining your palms. We recommend the best-selling Vita Liberata Phenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Mousse (£37.50) which comes in three different skin shades and includes a free mitt.
Top tip: Shave at least 24 hours prior to application to avoid any irritation. Make sure your skin is clean and completely dry to ensure the smoothest coverage.
Gel tanning products glide on easily and absorb very quickly, making them a great choice if you like to see results fast. The multi-award winning Xen-Tan Luminous Gold Gel (£24.99) is a must-have for your summer beauty kit.
Top tip: No matter how fast drying a tanning product claims to be, you should wait at least 15 minutes before putting your clothes on or going to bed. Always wear old clothing as fake tan can stain if it’s not washed out straight away.
Spray and mist tans are handy for getting the hard-to-reach areas, like the back of the thighs and arms. Choosing a product with an instant bronzer is helpful for seeing where you’ve applied so you don’t go overboard. We recommend Sienna X Express Tanning Mist with Q10 (£15.95), which includes a 360 degree nozzle and sets in just two to four hours.
Top tip: Before tanning your face, put some Vaseline on your eyebrows and along the hairline to stop the tanning product from sticking to these areas and tinting them orange.
