If there’s one make-up look that can go from sultry to shocking in a matter of seconds, it’s the smoky eye.
Many of us will spend ages trying to perfect the smudging and colour contouring techniques, but it can be tricky trying to figure out what shades will work best and the best ways to apply the shadow.
So it’s always a bonus when brands are willing to help you perfect a smoky eye in a few simple steps.
Enter Bourjois Smoky Stories Quad Palettes
A collection of eight complimentary smoky eye shades – ranging from intense black to soft nudes – these palettes provide a step-by-step guide to shadow, define and highlight your eyes.
You can choose your shades based on the specific look you are trying to create. For example if you want an intense smoky eye, the Grey and Night palette – with rich black and grey tones – is your best bet.
If you’re aspiring to something more colourful and eye-popping, the In Mauve Again palette – with lavender and plum undertones – is probably a better choice.
Based on our love for rose, gold tones we chose the Over Rose palette. This includes three pink toned taupe shades with a pink glitter highlighter.
Smoky eye test
On application, the first thing you will notice about the Bourjois palette is the quality and incredibly smooth texture. Using the double-ended foam applicator, we were able to delicately paint the light, base shadow across the eye in one single swoop.
The following steps were just as effortless, and we were able to quickly blend all the shades into the eye socket, one after the other.
Although there is a bit of crumbly fall out of the shadow when you use the applicator, this can be easily remedied with a sweep of face powder.
We also found the glitter was a bit ‘blingy’ for daytime, but it provides a handy hint of shimmer for an evening look.
Bourjois reckon these quad eyeshadows have 12-hour hold, thanks in particular to the integrated primer into the light base shadow.
Although the colours definitely had staying power, the 12-hour mark is slightly ambitious. For a cheap and cheerful price of £7.99, however, we were very happy with the result.
Overall, the pigmented shades kept their intensity for well over six hours. The handy, palm-sized compact also meant the palette was easy to carry around in our make-up bag for whenever we needed top-ups.
Definitely recommend if you need an easy to use smoky eye product that doesn’t break the bank.
