There’s a very good reason why we call it ‘beauty sleep’ – when we turn in at night, our whole body goes into repair mode. Skin renews itself and key hormonal and metabolic changes occur, leaving us looking brighter and healthier in the morning.
So why not make the most of this beauty sleep and give your skin and hair a bit of a boost during this time of renewal and replenishment? Here at Beauty Resource we have found some simple beauty tricks to help you make the most of your slumber:
No one likes waking up looking puffy-faced, so try sleeping on your back with your head resting on an extra pillow to prevent this. The added height and sleep position is thought to help drain excess fluids from your face and reduce swelling. You may also want to consider investing in a cooling eye cream formula to apply to your eyes at night. We love Origins No Puffery cooling mask (£24).
Night time is perfect for slathering on thick creams and oils to hydrate parched, stressed out skin. The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Overnight Serum-In-Oil (£12) is a soothing, non-greasy formula that absorbs quickly into the skin and provides intense hydration. Mix a few drops with your moisturiser and apply using gentle, circular hand movements.
Dry, cracked heels are an unattractive feature during the summer months, so start giving them some TLC on a regular basis before getting into bed. A great tip is to melt a couple of drops of petroleum jelly in the microwave to create a liquid consistency. Add a drop of soothing lavender essential oil then apply generously to your feet. Finish by putting on a pair of cotton socks to lock in the moisture for an intensive overnight treatment.
Take care to condition
Many of us never find the time to deeply condition our locks, so why not apply an overnight conditioning treatment instead? KeraCare Overnight Moisturising Treatment (£10.95) is a luxurious mask that leaves hair silky, shiny and tangle-free come morning. Alternatively, hair oils are becoming increasingly popular and a great option for overnight care is L’Oreal’s Extraordinary Oil (£9.99). Apply liberally to dry hair before bed, paying particular attention to your mid-lengths and ends, then wash out in the morning.
