If you’re anything like us, chances are you’re stuck in an eyeliner rut. Black kohl lined eyes are one of the first things us girls learn when we start wearing make-up, and while this look can be great – there are plenty of other options out there. So whether you’re the queen of the 60s flick or a punk-princess with heavily lined eyes, keep reading for a refresher course on all things eyeliner:
Pick the right colour for your eyes
Classic black is a no-brainer when it comes to creating a dramatic smokey eye, but it can look harsh for everyday. Take note of your eye colour and try the following to mix things up:
- Brown/hazel eyes – most shades work well for you, but we love navy blues and deep purples on coffee coloured eyes.
- Blue eyes – brighten up those baby blues with a hint of copper or bronze.
- Green eyes – make your emerald eyes pop with a swipe of lavender, plum or khaki liner.
Gel, powder or pencil?
If you have round eyes, avoid harsh pencil lines. Instead try powder and gel formulas, these will smudge enough to give you that almond shape. If you have oval-shaped eyes, fine pens and pencils are ideal for enhancing your look.
Eyeliner typically smudges because the eye area is too oily. To overcome this prep the eye area; avoiding oily eye creams and adding a primer or layer of foundation will help keep the area oil-free. A dusting of powder will also help to absorb any excess oil and will help to make your liner last longer.
Aim to keep the eyeliner on top thicker than the liner on the bottom to help your eyes appear more open and awake. Finally, keep your liner on hand throughout the day and reapply as necessary.
