But which do you choose? Sushi, mildew, or Pope Benedict’s very own signature scent from Sylvana Casoli?
They may sound utterly ridiculous, but these are all real perfumes available for purchase. It seems a growing trend for ‘alternative perfumes’ is sweeping the world, with edgy consumers shunning the designer classics in favour of smells that pack a punch.
California-based perfumer Sanae Barber is at the forefront of this smelly revolution with her new perfume ‘Innocence By Misty’, which apparently smells of marijuana.
Ms Barber runs a perfume brand called Sanae Intoxicants, which is aimed at California’s Indie rock crowd – who of course wouldn’t be smelt dead wearing Chanel or Gucci. This particular scent was specially blended for popular LA folk singer Josh Tillman (AKA Father John Misty), giving it some extra cool-points.
Ms Barber explained how the whiff of weed was entirely accidental after she blended a perfume with notes of orange blossom. She told the blog ‘Cut’: “I was immediately reminded of medicinal marijuana drops. I love the way that marijuana smells. I think weed tinctures are really lovely.”
The limited edition scent epitomises Ms Barber’s own philosophy about perfume, which is that wearing it is an ‘experience’ akin to experimenting with drugs.
Of course if you’re not into abusing your body and breaking the law, we suggest sticking with the perfume.
The kooky American said she first stumbled into the perfume industry while on holiday in Santa Cruz. She blended her first scent and immediately became hooked. She told Cut that when she wore the scent out in public, people would stop her to ask what she was wearing and if they could buy some from her.
Despite growing interest in her range of ‘interesting’ perfumes, Ms Barber insists she does everything herself, including hand-blending the formulas and packing up and mailing the finished products.
She describes her scents as ‘songs or stories’ that people can interpret and experience in their own unique ways.
Ms Barber is part of an emerging generation of indie perfumers. Others include Demeter’s rather intriguing ‘Sushi’ scent, and another product dubiously named ‘Mildew’. Who said we should all smell like flowers anyway? Some of us might prefer essence of smoked salmon and old moss.
Everyone knows about Lady Gaga’s ‘Fame’, based on the chemical make-up of blood and semen, but did you know Pope Benedict himself has his own signature scent? It seems the perfume world is coming alive with creative new ideas and controversial products…but which one will you choose?
Innocence by Misty is being released in a very limited collection of 300 bottles retailing at around £47.38.
You can have your bottle shipped to the UK from the Sanae Intoxications website.
