Endermologie was originally developed during the 1980s in France by Louis-Paul Guitay to treat burns and loosen scar tissue. However while using the procedure it became increasingly evident that it also improved the appearance of cellulite. Approximately 90% of women over the age of 20 develop cellulite (sometimes referred to as the ‘orange peel effect’), so unsurprisingly the popularity of the procedure for aesthetic purposes increased rapidly and continues to grow today. Endermologie is now used by beauticians, masseurs, physiotherapists, dermatologists and plastic surgeons and while you cannot get rid of of cellulite completely, endermologie can massively improve the appearance of those lumps and bumps.

What is endermologie cellulite treatment?
Endermologie has become known as the process of reducing cellulite by mechanical means, using massages, rolling and manipulation of the tissues.
Endermologie is a non surgical procedure and is the first cellulite treatment to be approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Not only does endermologie help improve the appearance of cellulite, but it can also improve circulation, relieve minor muscular aches, improve skin tone and skin radiance.
Before treatment begins, patients will receive a consultation to discuss any questions they may have such as what is cellulite, what causes it, how does the cellulite treatment work, is it a cellulite cure, will it get rid of cellulite completely, what is endermologie and how does it work etc... they will also discuss their particular condition and the probable effectiveness of the endermologie treatment. They will work together to agree on a programme for treatment. A minimum of 6-10 cellulite treatments are usually recommended and are often the amount required to notice a real difference. The results from these 6-10 sessions will usually last a few months, and a 30 minute treatment every month or so will help to maintain the new shape. Some patients may decide to have more sessions initially if they feel they need more than the minimum recommended. Each patient will be different and have their own needs so the amount of treatments and any further sessions will all be discussed in the consultation.
During the treatment, patients will wear a specialised body stocking and the therapist will use a hand-held massaging device on the affected area. Each treatment will last approximately 35-45 minutes and most patients choose to have about 1 to 2 sessions per week. A trained beauty professional should always conduct the procedure and the treatment should never hurt as they’ll be able to assess the level of massage your body is able to cope with.
What is cellulite and what causes it?
Firstly, what is cellulite? It can be described as the orange peel effect which many women suffer from on different areas of their body. It mainly occurs on the hips and thighs but can be found elsewhere as well. It gives skin a dimpled and uneven appearance, but is painless. It is caused by fat cells beneath our skin which trap toxins and retain water so the action of the massaging machine during endermologie breaks down the fat, water and toxins, allowing the lymphatic system to drain it all away. While you cannot entirely get rid of cellulite, there are a few things which we know worsen the appearance of it, such as:
Diet - Eating too much carbohydrates, fat and salt can increase the amount that you have. Likewise, not eating enough fibre rich foods such as whole grains, fruit & vegetables, nuts, seeds and beans can have the same effect on the appearance of cellulite.
Lifestyle - Certain lifestyle factors, such as smoking and exercise can influence the way it looks and how severe it is. Try to avoid sitting or standing in one position from long periods of time, stop smoking and get out in the fresh air and do some exercise.
Clothes - Cellulite can be affected by blood flow so wearing clothes which are tight and restrict blood flow to your legs won't help your skin.
Genes - There are some genes which are required for cellulite to develop. Therefore, your genetic characteristics such as having a slow metabolism and an insufficient circulatory system may mean you are more at risk of developing it.
Hormones - Many people believe that certain hormones (insulin, noradrenaline, estrogen, prolactin and thyroid hormones) play an important role in the production and development of cellulite.
Will diet and exercise get rid of cellulite?
A good diet and plenty of exercise are not a cellulite cure and certainly will not get rid of cellulite, however, poor nutrition and lifestyle tend to worsen the appearance of it. Therefore it is widely accepted that a balanced diet and regular exercise will complement endermologie and prevent it getting worse.
This should be discussed during your consultation, and you should try to maintain a healthy lifestyle during and after your treatment to see the best results of endermologie.
As with any procedure, the cost will vary depending on the beauty professional you choose. However, you should expect to pay around £40 - £70 per treatment. Some salons will offer a discounted rate if you purchase the sessions in bulk so you should look into this before paying for your first session.
