While our skin gets a lot of tender loving care (at least it should do) we often neglect our lips. We tend to forget how much abuse they endure and that they are constantly exposed to irritants, such as the tip of the tongue and the food and drink we consume.
Furthermore, lips are extremely sensitive – especially as they lack the protection of oil and sweat glands that the rest of our skin enjoys. Therefore, taking care of them is vital for ensuring they stay in prime condition and provide the best base for your favourite lippy.
Looking after your lips is simple, and here are six easy steps to help you on your way to the perfect pout:
1) Treat your lips exactly as you would your face
This is the first beauty rule for luscious lips. When you are cleansing and moisturising, take care to include your lips in this routine. Remove lip gloss and lipstick before bed, exfoliate regularly and moisturise.
To give your lips a good scrub, you could try Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub (£5.50)
2) Play down your eyes when going for bold lips
To get your make-up looking fabulous, you have to maintain a balancing act. Don’t play up both your eyes and your lips as this can look overdone and sometimes scary. Pick one feature and go big.
For subtle, well-moisturised lips, we love CK One Pure Colour nude lipstick in Brainiac (£13)
3) Find the right colour
Different lipsticks will suit different skin tones, so take your time choosing the right shade. For a quick guide, check out our Back to basics: Lipstick blog post.
4) Use a primer
These days make-up is long-lasting thanks to the invention of primer, so it makes perfect sense to apply some to your lips too. Super staying power is guaranteed no matter what the occasion, especially if you use a product like Too Faced Lip Insurance Primer (£14.50)
5) Start in the middle
Lipstick application is a no brainer – slick it on. But starting from the centre of your lips and moving outwards can actually improve the look of your lippy. You will be less shaky and application will be smoother and more consistent. Make sure you add a touch of liner to outline the edges of your lips as a guide. We love Mac Pro Long-wear Lip Pencil (£14.50)
6) Highlight your cupids bow
After popping on your lippy, give your cupids bow a touch of light-reflecting power with the help of a concealer or highlighter cream. This will make your lips look nice and plump. You should try Boots No.7 Instant Radiance Highlighter (£9.95).
